Madness
So it's 8:47 p.m. on day one of the NCAA tournament and I'm having my doubts. I'm batting a meager .500 on my picks after my bold prediction of a Davidson/Old Dominion secound round matchup fell through. Davidson was so close. Really close. Anyway, I'm in last place in my pool on Facebook (thanks to Chris' breaking of the rules and assisting Megan with her picks), Crystal is gloating that she's beating me as well (a common theme that holds surprisingly true for football games as well) and I'm beginning to wonder if perhaps the sports gods are punishing me for making Chris watch tennis during commercial breaks this afternoon and secretly wishing we'd watch Nicole Vaidisova instead of Butler. In short, I'm being violated.
And then Blake calls around 9:00 and wisks me away to Creekside Cinemas to watch 300. Two hours of bare flesh and gratuitous violence are unceremoniously interrupted by a call from Matt Steen, off serving his fellow man several states away. And why has he taken me from this surprisingly quality-filled epic? To ask about a basketball game, of course.
But there's something different about Matt's question; I know the answer. I've spent all week pouring over brackets trying to accurately identify the fates of NCAA basketball teams, and finally I can answer an inquiring mind with 100% certainty. "No, Wake Forest did not make the NIT."
And just like that the fates turned. I returned home from the movie to find that Chris' confident prediction that Wright State would beat Pittsburgh was sadly unfounded. More importantly, Virgina Commonwealth won. This was fun, not only because Duke failed to win a single game in a tournament this year, but because, in a day filled with higher seeds holding serve, I had correctly called an upset. Just one. Out of like four predicted upsets. But still.
I'm back baby!
